About Tim

Tim wrote his first story - a tale about a girl with round spectacles, a lightning-bolt-shaped scar and magic - when he was nine years old. (OK, so the bit about the scar isn’t true.)

After studying criminology and English literature at university, and working widely and dangerously as a landscaper and labourer, Tim obtained a cadetship at The Sun News-Pictorial. A decade in journalism followed at newspapers including The Age, Herald Sun, The Weekly Times and The Australian.

Journalism saw Tim travel to India, Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory and throughout country Victoria, covering everything from crime to politics. He won several awards before switching to online media, working briefly as a film reviewer and then as a website editor.

Tim’s first novel, Game as Ned, is a re-imagining of the Ned Kelly story exploring themes such as bullying, difference and injustice. Told through the eyes of two teenagers, the book has attracted rave reviews from secondary students, particularly from the toughest critics of all - reluctant readers. Game as Ned is a Children’s Book Council of Australia notable book (2008), and was long-listed for the Inky and Ned Kelly awards. It was also recommended as a book “useful for therapists” in the 2007 Australian Family Therapists Award for children’s literature.

Tim’s next novel for young adults, Five Parts Dead, will be published by Text Publishing in 2010.
