Can’t believe I haven’t posted this already. This is family history storytelling by The Waifs’ Donna Simpson and Vikki Thorn – and probably the song that broke open the US music market for them.
You’ve got to like the rhyming ‘Australia’ of with ‘sailor’. And the fact Josh Cunningham makes his own instruments.
I feel like there’s a link to my mob, too. Some years back my wife and I dropped our kids with the grandparents and celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary by travelling to a very cold Ballarat to hear The Waifs play live.
It was a sensational gig. It started early (i.e. not 11pm). We all pressed in close to keep warm. The baby Waifs wandered on and off stage. A member of the audience provided Vikki with a C mouth organ when she couldn’t find her own. It’s always good to see musos at the top of their game but that concert was particularly organic and great fun.
